Celebrate Repeal Day
Happy Repeal Day! It was 74 years ago today that prohibition ended thanks to the ratification of the 21st amendment. On January 16, 1919 the 18th amendment was ratified, beginning the countdown to the end of alcohol sales, production and transportation as well as banning the import and export of "intoxicating liquors" in the United States. It was one year later, on January 16, 1920 the full power of the amendment took place and alcohol literally became illegal in the US. Organized crime picked up where once legal alcohol production left off and thus bootlegging was born. America's thirst for alcohol only grew stronger. On December 5, 1933 the 21st amendment was ratified which repealed the 18th amendment, putting an end to prohibition.
