Practical inventions
Ok. We're not talking earth shattering inventions here, but practical things that really work. The fabric shaver. Heard of them? I don't know how I would have come to know about them, but about a week ago I realized I needed one. I recently breathed new life into some old uniform shirts thanks to another cool invention, Oxy Clean. While the Oxy Clean got the yellow out from the armpits, it didn't remove the pilling in the pits or the collar.
"A ha! I need a fabric shaver," I exclaimed. I picked one up at Target for six bucks and went at the uniform shirts this morning. Voila! I was surprised at how quickly and efficiently the little marvel worked. The fabric shaver seemed like something that would be cool -- if it worked. It worked better than I expected. And for six bucks? Great deal. And now I have four, like new uniform shirts for a very small price.
Now more on the Oxy Clean. Ever try to get yellow out of your pits? I don't know about you but it does not take long for my white uniform shirts to look dingy and yellow pretty quickly. The manufacturer says I can't bleach them and recommends washing the shirts right after wearing them to prevent yellowing. Uh, like I can do that. Did they forget they're making uniforms for flight crews that can be gone days, even weeks at a time? Washing a shirt after each use is just not practical. They sit in my laundry bag in my suitcase for several days before I make it home.
I use a little Tupperware tub, put a scoop of Oxy Clean in and fill it with hot water. I let the shirts soak in the mixture for a few hours then wash normally. It works every time, and now I soak them about once a month. And now that I've removed the pilling, the shirts look nearly new and will last far longer than they ever have in the past. Which is great, because it ultimately saves me money. Hooray for practical inventions!
